In a hockey-rabid market like Vancouver, Rob Fai Nation Radio was the first stop for listeners across the province both online and on the radio after each and every Canucks game, and within months became the premier destination for everything sports as host Rob Fai asserted himself as one of Canada's must-listen late-night radio hosts.
"We were five nights a week, live, local, and interactive," states Fai who looks back on his time in the late-night slot at TSN1040 fondly.
"Our online numbers were unmatched, and the late night community that we built was something I think will stand the test of time. It was special, and can be once again."
Fai's evening broadcast was two-hours of fast-paced sports information, interviews, and callers from all across the province. Listeners would wait on-hold sometimes 10-15 minutes before the show started just to ensure they had a slot when the mic finally turned on and Rob opened up the phones.
"That was wild to me. Seeing the engagement and the anticipation for the show was really surreal some nights and once we opened up the phones it was pretty much 'off to the races' as these regulars simply knew they had a home for their love of sports."
The height of RFNR came in the winter of 2021 with the Canucks struggling and fan ire at an all-time high. Fai understood the tempurature of the market and took each show to a new level balancing his sharply pointed opinion alongside a fanbase that wanted answers. Fai became must-listen radio on a nightly basis and both sponsors and listeners had a community to come together each evening to share opinion and insight.
Then, February 9th, 2021.
Bell Media abruptly shut down its sports stations in multiple stations including Vancouver ending a nearly 20-year run with TSN 1040 as the 'Voice of Vancouver Sports.'
"That one stung because it wasn't just a show getting taken away - it was everything. We were as hot as a pistol as a station despite losing the rights to the Canucks (Vancouver's most coveted broadcast piece) and suddenly it was over in the blink of an eye. It's a tough industry for sure but that moment made me realize the impact TSN 1040 had made on the city. It was a long time before people finally came to terms with it."
Rob quickly pivoted his show to an online Canucks post-game show called 'The Nation' which had immediate traction in the market as well as sponsorship opportunities for the many who wanted to continue following the late-night host.

After the season, Rob stepped away from the show to focus on another endeavour helping create Nation Extreme Wrestling (yes, professional wrestling!) where he quickly built one of Canada's top brands.

Rob made one final transition back into the media world become a host on CKNW 980 AM where for the past two years he has become a stable voice within the news industry hosting Weekends on CKNW as well as filling in on multiple shows both in Vancouver, and Toronto.

"I think having the experiences of the past few years away from RFNR has made me a much more complete broadcaster. In the three years away I have run a company, worked in the best newsroom in Canada and really learned how to structure and build a proper broadcast. I would be thrilled to bring a new, revitalized version of this show back to the airwaves and I think it would be well-received." adds Fai.
"Two hours, live, local and interactive content in a coveted timeslot historically and on a station that built sports radio in this market would be the finish line for me."
